We understand there are questions about a recent incident at Arden of Warrenville involving our staff. This FAQ provides clear, factual information about what occurred, our pool policies and procedures, and the steps we take to protect the safety and well-being of our residents, guests, and employees.
Was Mr. Sullivan singled out because he is Black?
Absolutely not. Arden Living does not tolerate discrimination of any kind, and we take allegations of discrimination seriously. We always treat our residents, guests, and employees with respect and professionalism. Unfortunately, the incident has been falsely portrayed as discrimination.
Our staff member responsible for monitoring pool access followed her usual routine and went to the pool area to check everyone’s pool passes. Mr. Sullivan was approached first because he was closest to the entrance. CCTV footage shows that other individuals at the pool were also asked to present their IDs or pool passes. Everyone had their valid pool pass, except for Mr. Sullivan. Our staff simply followed established property policies that applied equally to all residents and guests.
Was everyone else at the pool asked to show a pool pass or identification?
Yes, as we do every day. CCTV footage shows that other individuals at the pool were also asked to present their pool passes as part of our standard safety procedure, which Mr. Sullivan agreed to follow before coming to stay at the property. Everyone had a valid pool pass except for Mr. Sullivan.
Why was Mr. Sullivan asked to provide identification?
Our pool rules require everyone using the pool facilities to have a valid pool pass, which they must obtain from the front desk by presenting a valid ID. Mr. Sullivan acknowledged and agreed to this policy before coming to stay at the property. However, Mr. Sullivan did not check in at the front desk so our staff did not have his ID on file to verify that he was a guest or authorized to use the pool. We simply didn’t know who he was given that he never checked in.
What happens when someone does not have a pool pass?
If someone does not have a pool pass, our staff first works to verify that the person is a tenant or guest. Once that is confirmed, a temporary pool pass can be issued. Our staff offered to issue Mr. Sullivan a temporary pass, but we needed his ID to confirm his occupancy status. He refused to provide it.
What do guests need to do before arriving at the property?
Guests receive the property’s rules and check-in information before their stay and are asked to review and acknowledge them. If they plan to use the pool, they are also asked to provide the first and last names of all adult guests in advance. Upon arrival, each adult must stop by the front desk with a valid ID to receive pool access. Children do not need to be registered for pool access. These same procedures were communicated to Mr. Sullivan before his stay, and he confirmed that he had reviewed and agreed to the property rules, including the pool access requirements.
Why were the police called?
Our staff initially tried to resolve the situation directly. They explained the policy and requested Mr. Sullivan’s information but he refused to provide his identification. Mr. Sullivan never checked in with the front desk upon his arrival (as he agreed to do), never obtained a pool pass, falsely identified himself as a tenant, and never provided ID when politely asked, so our staff had no way to identify him as a guest. That is why authorities were called to help resolve the situation.
Why were the police called the second time?
The police were called a second time after Mr. Sullivan returned to the front lobby and approached the staff again. Our staff member felt uncomfortable because Mr. Sullivan demanded her name and contact information and made comments that she found intimidating. Given the nature of the interaction and her concerns for her safety, staff contacted the police again for assistance.
What action has Arden Living taken regarding the employees involved?
We have reviewed the incident and continue to support our employees, who were following safety protocols for everyone who was at the pool that day. As a result of these false narratives, they have been subjected to harassment, threats, and the sharing of their personal information online. Out of an abundance of caution, we have increased security at the property. We take the safety and privacy of our employees seriously. We want to ensure our employees feel supported, our tenants feel safe, and people have a clear and complete understanding of what happened.
Should residents be concerned about their safety?
We understand the safety concerns related to this situation. We are taking those concerns seriously and have added security at the building out of an abundance of caution. We are also continuing to monitor the situation closely and will adjust our security measures as needed. Our priority is to make sure our tenants, guests, and employees feel safe and supported, and we will continue taking appropriate steps to maintain a secure environment at the property.
